Echidna are present in most states and territory of Australia. One of those unique marsupials which are also monotremes it has only one close cousin - the platypus. Unique as a species, they do have some variances depending on where they live and the range of climate they have to endure. This little chap was photographed in northern Tasmania where winter nights can certainly drop below freezing and as such his spiny coat of prickles has a greater preponderance of hairs/fur than his relatives in far north Queensland where tropical temperatures are more normal.
