Platypus are struggling all across the Eastern states of Australia as the water ways they call home are drying up with climate change or being drained for development. One of the last places where they survive in anything like numbers of the past is Tasmania. This one was caught frolicking in a billabong on the northern hinterland of Tasmania and proving to be a very effective hunter this afternoon. They have small pits in that bill which are sensitive to the electrical activity in the muscles of prey, this making detection and capture easier even in muddy creeks and swampy waters.
